As a young man, he became an excellent cook and was hired as a chef at a renowned restaurant in Saratoga Springs, frequented by high society. Once, responding to a persnickety customer, Crum retrieved the dish of French fries, whittled them into very thin slices, and cooked them in hot oil, creating the forerunner of the potato chip. Later in life, Crum opened his own restaurant, where everyone was treated equally, regardless of skin color, gender, age, or economic status. This was a great read aloud for my third grade class. I was able to teach character traits, feelings, and cause and effect all with one book. My students always refer back to this book, too, because they found it to be such an interesting story.

This book is an awesome read! The illustrations are vivid and colorful. It's great for learning about the history of the invention of one of America's favorite snacks, potato chips. It's great for a classroom unit.
