The answers to all the odd exercises have been provided in the back of the text. Lab exercises have been developed for each chapter. Definitions and formulas have been boxed to highlight them. Chapter 6 has been split into two chapters. The introduction to control charts and the work with x and R charts have been retained in Chapter 6. The x R, x s,and the small and short run variations have been moved into a new Chapter 7. New exercises have been added. The discussion on linear regression has been expanded to include the application of the linear regression mode on statistical calculators. The discussion on Walter Shewhart's contribution to control charts has been expanded to provide a better understanding of the concepts. A new section on Six Sigma quality concepts has been introduced. NEED

Statistical process control (SPC) is not a new topic in industry: It has been used off and on since its development in the 1920s. However, since the 1970s it has become an extremely important tool. A new economic age is developing in which the demand for quality is rapidly increasing, with a resulting global competition of companies striving to provide that quality. The detection system of final inspection, a costly method of quality control, is giving way to a prevention system that uses in-process inspection and SPC to build quality into a process. This change requires extensive training in SPC. Also, for the most effective application of SPC, management must coordinate a team effort in which everyone in the workforce can contribute meaningfully to the quality effort. PURPOSE

This book was written with the following goals:

To provide an understanding of basic statistical concepts. To present a management philosophy for successful application of statistical process control. To give the student a solid foundation on control charts: setting scales, charting, interpreting, and analyzing process capability. To teach the student the quality concepts and problem-solving techniques associated with statistical process control. To provide a readable source of SPC topics that the student can refer to as the on-the-job need arises. FLEXIBILITY

The book is designed for use in two-year and four-year colleges, as well as industry. The order of the chapters features a low-level mathematics approach so that anyone with a basic mathematics background can learn the control chart concepts in Chapters 1 through 10 and the problem-solving concepts in Chapter 11.

The book is mathematics-friendly:

Only the needed mathematics is presented. The mathematics knowledge that is required for each topic is reviewed at the introduction of the topic.

The entire book contains enough material for a three-credit-hour course. The mathematics prerequisite for someone studying the entire book should be elementary algebra.

The recommended sequence for college is Chapters 1 through 13, with the basic algebra in Appendix A reviewed at the beginning of Chapter 3. The probability section in the Appendix is optional and can be taught with the introduction to probability in Chapter 5 or with the applications of probability in Chapters 8 or 10. One possible variation in the sequence would be to teach Chapter 10 after Chapter 5. Then all of the out-of-control patterns would be available for analyzing the control charts presented in Chapters 6 through 9. The book sequence introduces a few basic out-of-control patterns for use in the presentation of control charts, followed by a more comprehensive analysis after all the control charts have been introduced.

The recommended sequence for industry is Chapters 1 through 11. Chapters 12 and 13 are more job-specific and may be taught to particular groups. The probability in Appendix A can be taught at any time if a more thorough understanding of the probability concepts in chart interpretation or sampling is desired. The basic algebra in Appendix A can be taught at the beginning of Chapter 3. EXAMPLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS

The examples have been carefully chosen to provide a thorough understanding of the concepts involved. A detailed, step-by-step format has been used throughout the book to provide a pattern that can be used effectively, both for the immediate problems and for future reference. The examples feature worksheets and control charts to be filled in by the student and completed worksheets and charts for checking results. Smack in the middle of this brood is the narrator, 9-year-old Juice Faulstich, a sweet, resilient tomboy who likes to explore and learn. She gets along well with her big and little sisters, has talent as an apprentice metalworker in her Pa's makeshift shop, and forgets every worry when she's dancing to fiddle music. She's so capable, in fact, she's the family member all the little ones look up to the most. Yet it turns out that the highly skilled Juice, who can handle everything from power tools to her Pa's depression ("We all look out for him. But I look out for him best, even Ma says so") is plagued by an inability to understand letters and reading. "No one believes me. No one believes how hard I try. No matter what I do, it's never enough," she explains.

With wonderfully gentle narrative pacing, Just Juice weaves together a compelling plot that involves Juice's learning challenges, Ma's suddenly difficult pregnancy, and a pending foreclosure on the family house due to unpaid taxes. Like her Newbery Award-winning Out of the Dust, Hesse once again celebrates a child's ability to extract beauty, pleasure and even signs of hope from her harsh surroundings. The opening image of Ma "spreading grape jelly so thin on the sliced white bread you can hardly find the purple" gives readers an immediate, vivid impression of the Faulstich family's poverty level. The simple, honest narrative of nine-year-old Justus ("Juice") Faulstich matter-of-factly expresses her plethora of concerns: Pa is out of work again; Ma is pregnant and keeps having dizzy spells; and she herself has to repeat third grade because no matter how hard she tries, she simply can't learn to read. On top of that, the family must come up with back taxes amounting to $1000. The outside world may be cold and cruel ("Poor as Job's turkey, that's what the church ladies say we are"), but Juice doesn't let it overshadow the warmth of her home: "We might not belong to anyone else in this whole world. But us Faulstiches, we belong to each other." Hesse's poignant story of a family faced with seemingly insurmountable hurdles is filled with small triumphs and momentary insights. Juice's resourcefulness and faith in her father set him onto a vocational path, but also lead her to the realization that, as she learns to read, she may have to leave him behind: "Pa and me, we've been careful tiptoeing around this particular secret. But I can't let Pa's half of the secret keep me from doing something about mine." This brave heroine will pass the torch to readers everywhere; her courage is infectious. Ages 8-10.

Grade 3-5-Times are hard for the Faulstich family. Pa is out of work, Ma's pregnancy isn't progressing quite right, and the truant officer is after nine-year-old Juice. Although she is bright, letters and numbers behave differently for her than for other people, leaving her repeating the third grade and unable to read. The threat of losing their house to back taxes is the catalyst that leads Pa to open his own machine shop and Ma to make the children's schooling a priority. This is a timely event for Juice, who is just beginning to crack the reading code. Despite the absence of welfare, food stamps, and unemployment benefits, this is a contemporary story. The setting is Appalachia and the narrative is flavored with hill speech. Though the locale may seem foreign to urban or suburban children, the unity of the Faulstich family and the dignity with which they approach their poverty are absorbing and convincing. Juice's narration, for the most part, is both believable and lyrical, despite her life being "...as rough as a cob." In both pace and setting, the novel is reminiscent of Sable (Holt, 1994). All in all, a trim package with pared-down prose, a memorable main character, and enough complexities to provide ample food for thought.

This cycle of poems is perhaps the most memorable evocation in modern Canadian literature of the myth of the wilderness, the immigrant experience, and the alienating and schizophrenic effects of the colonial mentality. Since it was first published in 1970 it has not only acquired the stature of a classic but, reprinted many times, become the best-known extended work in Canadian poetry.

Susanna Moodie (1805-85) emigrated from England in 1832 to Upper Canada, where she settled on a farm with her husband. She wrote several books in Canada, notably Roughing It in the Bush, a famous account of pioneering that is still widely read. In poems about the arrival and the Moodies' seven years in the bush, which were followed by a more civilized ilfe in Belleville, and about Mrs Moodie in old age and then after death - in the present, when she observes the twentieth century destroying her past and its meaning - Margaret Atwood has created haunting meditations on an English gentlewoman's confrontation with the wilderness, and compelling variations on the themes of dislocation and alienation, nature and civilization.

The poems are supplemented by Margaret Atwood's collages and an 'Afterword' in which the poet says: 'We are all imigrants to this place even if we were born here....'

Beginning in the mid-sixties, while both were still students, they worked together on five limited-edition handmade books, volumes of Atwood?s poetry with Pachter?s interpretive artwork. The culmination of their collaboration, the work that is considered their masterpiece, is The Journals of Susanna Moodie. In her reading of Susanna Moodie?s chronicles of pioneer life in nineteenth-century Canada, Atwood found the haunting and timeless themes that still obsess us.

The poems of The Journals of Susanna Moodie were first published in 1970 in a standard format. This sequence of poems is regarded as a classic, in addition to being connected with her later novel, Alias Grace. In 1980, Pachter was able to add his own vibrant, evocative images and create the version they had dreamt of: a hand-set, hand-printed illustrated limited edition of 120 numbered copies.

This popular edition is a faithful re-creation of the original, accompanied by an introductory memoir by Pachter, describing his friendship with Atwood and the creative process behind this breathtaking work, and a foreword by David Staines, who pays homage to Atwood, Pachter, and Moodie and their central places in our art and literature.
