From the Back Cover

The construction principles of Celtic art were re-discovered in the middle of the 20th century by George Bain. Until his writing, the intricate knots, interlacings, and spirals used in illuminating The Book of Kells and in decorating craftwork and jewelry seemed almost impossible, "the work of angels." In this pioneering work, George Bain shows how simple principles, no more difficult than those used in needlecraft, were used to create some of the finest artistic works ever seen. He also explains how you can use these principles in re-creating artifacts and in creating your own Celtic designs for art and craft work or even for recreational use.Step-by-step procedures carefully introduce the simple rules and methods of Celtic knot work and the well-known designs from the great manuscripts and stone work. Later chapters build up to complex knot work, spiral work, and key pattern designs, with special coverage of alphabets and the stylized use of animals, humans, and plants. Altogether over 225 different patterns are presented for your use, with hundreds of modification suggestions, 110 historical and modern artifacts showing designs in use, a great number of letters including six complete alphabets and 25 decorative initials, and a number of animal and human figures used in the original Celtic works.Artists, students, craftspeople, even children can work with these patterns and instructions for creating dynamic designs for use in leather work, in embroidery and other needle work, in metalwork, jewelry making, card design, borders, panels, illuminations, and in countless other ways. Mathematicians will find a great deal of pleasure in the geometric principles on which the patterns are based. Art historians and others interested in studying Celtic art will find a great number of outstanding art works and the best presentation in English for understanding Celtic design.

I am a medieval history recreator with the Society for Creative Anachronism. I teach people how to make illuminated scrolls for awards. One of the most challenging classes is knotwork. This book simplifies everything. It's well documented, shows you the steps for a plethora of designs, and gives you some history. It will make my classes so much easier now. I will be recommending that all of students in 3 states buy this book to use for designs.

The author of this book was not well served by the publisher. Mr. Bain has done an enormous amount of research and invested a great amount of time in packaging and breaking down these complex designs, but the paper seems cheap and the designs beg for color, which would have required better paper. I am giving the author five stars but the publisher perhaps two. The cover exemplifies what the inside should look like.

I have recently taken to Clectic art and wanted a reference book on the many knots, spirals, and other arts. I got this and found it to be a HUGE work. Not for the timid! VERY in depth. I glean from some of the more simpler drawings. Proud to have bought it, now to begin the long journey to understand it. Loving every page regardless if I completely understand them.

Great book if you are already an artist. It is complicated however, as this artwork really demands attention and well thought out, almost mathematical thought process- which I don’t have!!! Love the book.

I received my first copy of this book 40 years ago, when I was taking my first art lessons. Back then it was virtually the only text on Celtic art available. Somehow over the years that copy was misplaced. I never forgot how simple and logical Mr. Bain's instructions were and I was delighted to purchase a replacement. One of the best things about Bain's technique is that it is so readily adaptable to unfamiliar designs that aren't specifically diagrammed in the book. Once you master his methods, you will be able to look at ancient designs and understand how they were drawn or constructed so that you can develop your own designs based on them. Excellent, and highly recommended.

I tend to read and study quite a bit before tackling a new project and this is no exception. This has been the best find for a special project I am planning for Christmas. The book has illustrations on every page, step by step, and takes so much guess work out of creating these amazing designs. It is a great purchase for personal reference or as a gift for someone special. Best wishes, xo

I got this as a suggested product from an online friend, and this is a very awesome book. None of the space on any page is taken for granted. It is packed full of spirals, knots, and other celtic symbols.....and broken down in "steps" to show how they are formed. I'm not an artist, but I am creative and I'm not disappointed by my purchase with this book. Thank you

Great book for learning how to draw celtic diagrams. The author explains the diagrams in the first section, then uses few words to describe how to draw them- an approach that really works well as it lets you visualize and learn the technique, rather than getting lost in words. It covers many, many types and shapes of celtic artwork.
